Birchbox: An iOS companion app and shopping experience

  • 2014 Webby Awards: People's Voice Winner
  • Best New Apps (twice)
  • Best New iPad Apps
  • Featured: Find the Perfect Present

Birchbox needed:

Birchbox, a subscription service offering a platform for discovering new products, wanted to realize their mission to make unique and popular items more discoverable. Their iPhone app needed to recreate the thrill of opening a Birchbox each month, as well as allowing users to track their boxes and order full-size versions of samples.

Two Toasters delivered:

We designed 3D models of the shipping boxes with a custom animation. Inside, users find a list of the samples they received that month. We oriented the app around a centerpiece Discover feed, with personalized product recommendations and tips. The shopping cart was enabled throughout the app simply by swiping left.

JackThreads: An Android shopping app for browsing and sharing men’s fashion

"They [Two Toasters] knew everything going on in our industry, and in our space. We felt a lot more confident working with them, because of the transparency of their process. At every moment, we knew exactly what they were working on and we had confidence in what we were building together. It’s been a great experience." JackThreads needed:, a men’s online shopping destination, needed an Android app to bring their users the street, skate, surf, and contemporary fashion that they curate from over 1,000 brands. JackThreads wanted shoppers to be able to share items with friends on social media accounts, check our sales, manage their JackThreads account and redeem gift cards. JackThreads has no cumbersome checkouts, the culprit for many abandoned shopping transactions.

Two Toasters delivered:

We streamlined consumer experience to showcase JackThreads’ products and take advantage of cutting-edge Android technology. The JackThreads app uses large pictures with minimal text to make shopping effortless on a wide range of screen sizes across the Android ecosystem. The app automatically picks the cheapest shipping option, displays expected delivery dates on product pages, and uses a key color to show the next step that should be taken. To help users get into sales quickly, the app integrates Facebook and Google for a one-click sign-in.

Google was so impressed with our JackThreads app they featured it onstage at the 2014 Google I/O conference.

JackThreads’ Return on Investment:

  • Conversion: +40% YoY, and 2-3x Mobile Web
  • Revenue: +1,980% YoY
  • Active Users: +11,000% YoY

Average User Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Steve B (user): “Awesome job. Looks great! I would have never used your site with the old app but now I am actually thinking of buying some things from here. Thanks for letting us sign up with our Google info too.”

Ebates: iOS and Android deal-browsing apps and shopping companions

"I have worked with Two Toasters on multiple projects and the best part is that you get best-in-class design and development under one house." Jason Gurwin, GM, Mobile at Ebates Inc.

  • Coupons (Deals & Rewards)

Ebates needed:

Ebates, a pioneering leader of online cash back shopping, needed an app for shoppers to browse or search for deals from over 1,600 stores. Ebates asked for iOS and Android apps that would also allow their shoppers to check their cash back total, discover coupons and promo codes, and scan items in-store to find any cash back or coupon opportunities.

Two Toasters delivered:

We kept a lot of the same feel and functionality between the iOS and Android apps, while simultaneously sticking closely to the Android design guidelines. We pioneered an Android library (‘MultiColumnListAdapter’) that compiled a grid of items through the ListView Android widget, which equates to a scrollable header and footer. Another library (SectionCursorAdapter) pulls information directly from the database, to allow for fast scrolling with a section header.
